The illustration reveals the ratio of various classifications of families that subsisted in poverty in the United Kingdom in 2002.  It can be clearly observed that of all the existing categories, those that were single or headed by a sole parent were in the worst financial straits as opposed to the elderly who were least likely to live in poverty.

To start with, the average percentage of poverty for all households was 14% and couples with children represented this closely with 15% while couples with no children fell well below it at 9%. Single aged people were slightly more economically disadvantaged than aged couples but the two still were the lowest poverty stricken categories at 7% and 5%, respectively.

Those afflicted with the highest poverty rates belonged to the categories of sole parents and those who were single with no children at approximately one quarter of their population or 26% and 24%, subsequently.

Task 2: Some people think governments should spend money on faster means of public transport. However, others think money should be spent on other priorities (eg cost, environment). Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Life is busier than ever in the twenty first century and saving time is on everyone's mind. Some opine that governing bodies ought to invest more capital into swifter modes of public transport while others believe that there are higher priorities such as environmental protection and clean renewable energy. I will examine both of these viewpoints and offer my position on the matter.

Investing in faster means of public transport could provide several significant benefits. First of all, it would save people time which would allow individuals to enjoy more sleep and leisure time. For example, if high-speed transport gets people to work thirty minutes earlier then they could use that opportunity to sleep in or have a longer breakfast. Moreover, this could increase a nations gross domestic product (GDP) as more time gives people more opportunities to purchase things such as foods, drinks, and products. In my experience, when I am not in school I am more likely to spend money and thus, boost the economy.

On the other hand, this capital could go to expanding public transport and clean energy infrastructure. In many cities investments are desperately needed to expand public transport thus this should be a priority. For instance, more public transportation infrastructure needs to be established such as vehicles, lanes and routes. Furthermore, public vehicles ought to have Wi-Fi installed on them which would help make up for them being less efficient than rapid transport. Additionally, capital needs to go into clean energy as the current environmental crisis is affecting human health adversely. Electrified public transport powered by clean renewable sources of energy is an investment possibility as are solar powered roads such as those currently being installed in progressive countries in Europe.

In sum, rapid transport would bring time saving benefits but in my view it would be wiser to invest in expanding public transport equipped with free Wi-Fi and investing in clean energy vehicles and infrastructure. If this is initiated it will allow people to be productive during their commutes as well as enjoy a healthier environment to live in.
