The pie charts below show the average household expenditures in Japan and Malaysia in the year 2010.

The histogram represents median family expenses for the year 2010 in Japan and Malaysia. The were five categories including housing, transport, food, healthcare, and other goods and services. It can be clearly observed that the Japanese spent the most on other goods and services while Malaysians highest expenditures went towards housing.

Just over one third of the household costs for Malaysians were for housing compared to approximately one fifth afforded by the Japanese. However, Japanese citizens dispensed 20% of their costs on transport or double what Malaysians did. Food expenditures were closer in comparison with Japan's allocation at just under a quarter and Malaysia hovering over that at 27% of their total.

Healthcare varied drastically even though it was the smallest expense of both countries with Japan being double that of Malaysia's mere 3%. Lastly, other goods and services was Malaysia's third largest expenditure at 26% and Japan's top category at nearly 30%.

Task 2: Most of the world’s urgent problems are caused by over-population. Do you agree or disagree?

Dire quandaries are currently something humanity is facing and many believe that this is ultimately due to the amount of people on the planet. I concur with this sentiment and will share my observations upon this matter.

Over-population is the underlying cause of most urgent global problems. First, more people equates to the necessity of more resources and this has led to the immense amount of plastic and other non-biodegradable debris in our oceans, rivers, and lakes. The Great Pacific Garbage Patch is an example of this as it threatens our oceans in an unprecedented way. Furthermore, a growing population demands more energy and power which is currently being supplied by fossil fuels. The amount of vehicles and factories that are necessary to support humankind have began the phenomena of possible runaway global warming which, according to scientists, may have disastrous results.

Over-population also is leading to extreme resource competition. War has been around since the beginning of human development but with modern nuclear weapons humans could very well compete themselves to extinction. The more people born, the more resource competition there is, and thus, the closer the possibility of thermonuclear conflict which would likely be catastrophic. There is a limit to the amount of chefs that can operate functionally in a kitchen and the same is true for people occupying a planet. Moreover, technology is advancing exponentially and near future military developments could possibly surpass the dangers that currently exist.

All in all, over-population is the root cause of the world's most pressing dilemmas such as excess detritus, global warming, and war. If this root issue progresses unchecked, the future of humanity will remain in peril.
